HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODS

Photographs of Macao by Choi Vun Tim

Foreword:

(…)

Older generations remember flooding as the most typical feature of San Kio area. Located at the northwestern of Macao, comprising Rua da Barca, Lin Kai Temple, Estrada do Repouso, Cinema Alegria and the Three Lamps area, San Kio is surrounded by hills on three sides. Being so low altitude with limited water discharge system, the area was prone to flooding during heavy rains. Ever since San Kio area was set up during Portuguese administration, flooding occurred almost every year.

Choi Vun Tim is a Macao-born photographer and despite terrible weather conditions, he has been documenting the flooding situations in san Kio since 1980s providing us a serious of precious images showing local’s daily life in flood mode. Surprisingly, flooding did not disrupt daily life, with San Kio residents still commuting, going to school, shopping and even playing on the street as usual. Flooding had been a common occurrence for their ancestors as it is for them, therefore they choose to face reality with a positive attitude, typical of resilience, adaptability and simplicity of most Macao residents in the 1970s and 80s.
