Renato Marques
I started engaging in photography when I was about 12 years old and enrolled in a photography club extracurricular activity at my Primary 6 level in Portugal.
One of our first activities was to make a "pinhole" camera using a shoe box, take photos with it, and then pass through all the steps of the revelation process so we could see them. It was magical and got me nailed since then.
I started taking photographs since then and practiced some ideas in a camera without film as it was very expensive at the time to buy film and have the shots developed. But, once in a while, and on special occasions, I would get one or two film rolls and I would play "for real."
Photography was always a part of my professional path (although indirectly) until around the year 2002 when I got my first digital camera which allowed me to start exploring more daily.
When I moved to Macau in 2007 and acquired better equipment I finally started to "work" with photography.
In the same year and because I had some previous collaboration on the writing side with the "MotoJornal" weekly publication in Portugal, I did my first photographic coverage of the Macau Grand Prix.
From there on I started doing events, and collaborations with media companies, working as a freelancer for people and enterprises as well as selling stock photos (mostly of Macau) on international websites.
In 2012 I co-founded and co-owned a monthly Automotive magazine (MOTORS) for about two years during which I also had the opportunity to explore further the motorsports side of my photography having attended dozens of worldwide motorsports events such as F1, MotoGP, Rally, WSBK, and other related series.
At the moment, I continue to work in photography regularly at Macau Daily Times. As a freelancer, I continue to collaborate with several companies mostly on product photography and catalogs.
Besides all this, photography is always present in my daily life, and there isn't a single day that I do not take a couple of snaps, even if just for fun or Social Media purposes :)
